Women in Egypt have assumed the post of cabinet ministers as far back as the early 1960s. The first woman cabinet minister was Ms. Hikmat Abu-Zeid, who took up the social affairs portfolio in September 1962.

For a very long time, women in Egypt have been denied their political rights. With the promulgation, however, of the 1956 Constitution, they were allowed full suffrage.
