WHO chooses Egypt to host anti-avian flew conference

The World Health Organization (WHO) has chosen Egypt to host an International Anti-Avian flu conference to be held by the end of October, a step that comes in appreciation of Egypt's role in controlling the disease.

Minister of Health and Population Hatem Al Gabali said on 5/9/2008 the measures taken by the Ministry to control bird flue have succeeded, pointing out that in 2006 symptoms have been discovered in 580 poultry farms while in 2008 only 15 spots were discovered.

He added that the total human infections hit 50 in number, 28 of them were cured by Tamiflu. This year, said Al Gabali the Ministry secured 2.5 million doses of Tamiflu against 900 doses in 2006. Al Gabali underlined the impact of campaigns launched by the Ministry to educate people about the disease, pointing out that a new campaign will be launched during the Holy month of Ramadan.

Egypt represented in the Ministry of Local Development signed an agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on bird flue fighting. According to the agreement, the Ministry will fund through soft loans the establishment of safe poultry breading projects in order to eliminate the random breading of poultry. The project will be applied in different governorates.
