
The governorate of Fayoum is located 85 km south of Cairo. It is one of the most important agricultural areas in Egypt.

Fayoum's total area is 60,687km. Its population is estimated at 2.1 million, according to population surveys in 1999.
Fayoum is famous of ancient monuments, which date to at least the 12th dynasty (1938-1756 BC).
It also has many wonderful tourist sites, such as the Qaroon Lake, Bahr Yusuf and a large waterwheel system with buckets, the only known example in Egypt, raises water to irrigation channels.
