Tourism Minister Rania el Mashat has expected an increase in the number of Chinese tourists visiting Egypt following the anticipated inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) next year.
Mashat made the remarks during a meeting with representative of a number of Chinese newspapers and news agencies on the side lines of her participation in the Bloomberg New Economy Forum hosted by China on November 20-22, the ministry said in a press statement on Monday.
The Chinese people are fond of Egyptian monuments and culture, she said, adding that Egypt seeks to attract more Chinese tourists in the coming period as part of the ministry's efforts to diversify its tourism markets.
Mashat added that her ministry went into partnership with the Chinese Ctrip Co. to promote Egyptian tourist sites in China, highlighting that her ministry adopts a three-axis promotion campaign abroad to give a contemporary image about Egypt.
Egypt’s tourism revenues jumped 28 percent in the fiscal year 2018/2019 to reach 12.6 billion dollars, she added.
